What is BMW DIS V57?
DIS V57 and SSS V32 are the latest versions of BMW GT1 software, offering numerous additional and extended features that the original Group Tester (GT1) contained.
Previously, BMW GT1 included both diagnostic and programming/coding options within a single system. However, as control modules and software complexity increased, two separate dedicated programs became necessary. Currently, BMW DIS V57 handles diagnostic functions, while BMW Progman SSS V32 manages programming, coding, and comfort settings. This software package supports BMW and MINI vehicles up to model year 2009.
Since DIS V57 is the latest official version, it is compatible with many newer BMW models, including E83, E6, and E9 series vehicles**, as well as Mini R56 vehicles built after 2006, which use the faster D-CAN interfaces.
Ignore any claims of newer versions beyond DIS V57 and SSS V32. These were the last official releases supplied to BMW dealers. Any software claiming to be a newer version has likely been heavily modified using files transplanted from ISTA, which replaced DIS in 2009.
System Requirements and Installation
What Operating System does BMW DIS V57 require?
We highly recommend Windows XP for this software. To avoid network and software conflicts, it is best installed on a dedicated laptop used only for diagnostics. Suitable laptops include:
Dell D610
IBM ThinkPad ‘X’ and ‘T’ series (similar era)
These laptops can be purchased cheaply on eBay.
However, if using a newer laptop, Windows Vista and Windows 7 (32-bit recommended) are also supported. Although DIS and Progman can run on 64-bit systems, 32-bit Windows is preferred for compatibility.
DIS V57 runs within a virtual environment using VMware, which is included in the software package. VMware replicates the original BMW UNIX-based factory environment, as there was never an official Windows-based version of DIS V57. Without VMware, it is impossible to run DIS V57 on any Windows OS.
Can I run DIS V57 without VMware?
No. DIS V57 is a complex, professional diagnostic tool originally written for UNIX. To make it accessible for home users, VMware is used to emulate the UNIX environment within Windows.
Laptop and Hardware Compatibility
What laptop do I need to run the software?
Any laptop running Windows XP (recommended), Vista, or Windows 7 with USB ports will work.
For older vehicles using the 20-pin round ADS interface, you must use a laptop with a 9-pin RS-232 serial port, as ADS interface cables only come with serial connections.
To avoid hardware and network conflicts, a dedicated laptop is best (e.g., Dell D610). If using a shared laptop, disable all firewalls, antivirus programs, and network connections (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Internet) while running the software.
What are the minimum laptop specifications?
BMW DIS V57 has been successfully tested on older Pentium 3 (750 MHz) laptops and runs well on 12-year-old Windows XP machines.
While CPU speed is not critical, memory availability is essential. We recommend:
Minimum RAM: 1GB (2GB preferred)
Hard drive space: At least 35–40GB free
Can I use a laptop with no serial ports?
Yes. The D-CAN interface, required for BMWs from 2005 onward, only comes in USB format.
For older vehicles using the 20-pin ADS connector, a USB-to-serial adapter is required. We recommend using the Belkin interface, as it has been tested for compatibility. The setup instructions include details on configuring COM ports for Ediabas and the Belkin Serial-to-USB converter.
Software Installation and Setup
How difficult is it to install DIS V57?
If you have basic computer networking skills and are comfortable with hardware, installation should be straightforward.
While not recommended for complete beginners, most users can follow the provided step-by-step installation manual, which includes detailed screenshots (Windows XP). Some Windows Vista/7/8 users may need to adjust settings slightly.
If you are unsure about installation, consider asking a tech-savvy friend or family member for help.
What interface do I need to connect my BMW/MINI to the software?
There are three main interface types, depending on your vehicle’s model and age:
BMW ADS Interface (20-pin round connector) – Found in engine bays of mid-to-late 90s BMWs.
OBDII K-Line Interface (16-pin rectangular connector, "Ediabas") – Used in BMWs from 1999–2005.
BMW D-CAN (K+D-CAN) Interface (16-pin, higher-speed OBDII format) – Used in 2005–2017 BMWs.
D-CAN interfaces are backward-compatible with older OBDII Ediabas-equipped vehicles.
🚨 Special Note: Some E36, E38, and E39 models (1998–2001) have both the 20-pin ADS and 16-pin OBDII connectors. In these cases, both interfaces are required for full functionality.
Using BMW DIS V57
Are installation instructions included?
Yes. A detailed instruction manual (with screenshots) guides you through:
Installing the software from the DVD
Setting up the VMware environment
Connecting BMW DIS V57 to Ediabas & D-CAN interfaces
Following this guide saves hours of frustration and avoids conflicting advice found online.
Is there a user manual for the software?
No. BMW DIS V57 was designed for trained dealership mechanics, so no official user guide was released.
However, most functions are menu-driven, intuitive, and easy to navigate. Many users successfully perform basic diagnostics and coding without difficulty. Some advanced features require patience and research (Google can help).
Does the software come with a warranty?
No. This software is sold as-is, and you use it at your own risk.
There is no guarantee that every user has the skills to use it correctly. If your BMW is still under warranty, we strongly recommend taking it to a dealer for free repairs instead.
Will this work on American and Australian BMWs?
Yes. This is an international version, compatible with left- and right-hand drive BMW & MINI vehicles worldwide (UK, Europe, USA, Canada, Australia, etc.).
Can I change my vehicle’s comfort settings?
Yes. This software allows access to BMW dealership-level coding options, including:
✔ Enable/disable DRLs✔ Auto door locking at a set speed✔ Pathway lighting settings✔ Driver seat position memory✔ Alarm acknowledgment options✔ And many more...
🚨 Warning: Coding changes are more complex than basic diagnostics and may require additional research.
